Spicy Tofu Avo Salad

Get your bliss notes
Ichi ni is our favorite local restaurant in Melbourne. Glen and I spent four months in Hakuba, a Japanese village, for the winter of 2009 and since then, our love affair with all things Japanese continues, not least the food. I ate this dish at Ichi Ni last week, and the next day I was trying to replicate it, though I had no idea what was in the dressing. The result- awesome! Perfect for a lazy snack at home, a dinner party, or served as tapas with friends!

Spicy Tofu Salad (vegan, gluten free)

  • Half a large block of tofu- gently squeezed with paper towel to remove excess water, and cubed
  • 1 avocado- cubed
  • 1 small hot red chili, or 1/2 a large one
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp avage nectar- I used dark agave
  • 2 tbsp sunflower seeds- optional
It’s super easy, you just combine everything in a nice big bowl, no need to cook the tofu, and serve it on some pretty dishes. Or keep it in your nice big bowl, and tuck in! At Ichi Ni, they served this with squares of nori, which we did also. It adds a nice blast of crunch to the salad, and any excuse to get in there with your hands is a good one. I’m not too sure which method I favored; making little tofu sushi rolls, or sandwiches using the nori as bread. Either way, good fun!

Glen also made some pumpkin.wasabi maki rolls and they were delicious! I love cook ups at home :D

      Hey Holly,
That’s such a shame you can’t eat avocado! And really the only thing I can think of that has a similar texture to avocado is tofu but it’s already in the recipe. I made a great tofu crunch salad the other day, pretty much the same mix but instead of the avo, I used finely diced celery, capsicum and added some kelp noodles. It was YUMMMMMMMM :) Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
