Alright. I’m looking for the most natural ways to deal with life. There are obviously clear, straight forward ways of initially handling this; adjusting food consumption, upping levels of activity, taking shorter showers, checking that all the lights have been switched off, using more public transport or just plain walking, etc. But here on this blog, recently, you have also heard my concerns about and opinions of the commercial beauty industry. I have downloaded an incredible app (after hearing about the book it is based on) called the Chemical Maze, it lists the chemicals we find on both food and cosmetic labels, and I urge you all to download it. Key in a few ingredients that you find in your favorite brands, some of which claim to be all natural, I’m sure you’ll be suprised. I am truly stunned at an industry that I used to not only wholeheartedly swoon over, but also actively played a role in: being a hair stylist. Every day not only would I spend hours upon hours inhaling powder bleach and peroxide, but I would have my bare hands in it; rinsing colors, shampooing and treating, perm solution, styling products. Towards the end of each clients’ experience I would then tell them why this shampoo is far superior to the product they have at home and why is was absolutely imperative that they purchase it now. As a hairdresser, I was detrained, just as I personally believe many people in the health industry are today. I told you that you need to take home a shampoo full of sulphates, petrochemicals and parabens because I was taught that’s what your hair needed, and at the end of the week I got a bonus pay cheque according to how much I sold. This analogy is not dissimilar to a health professional writing a prescription or suggesting you take the disastrous and rarely successful route of say, chemotherapy, instead of sound nutritional and lifestyle advice. We preach what we are taught, that is something I truly believe in. Every now and then a few people feel the need to peek above the fence and ask a few questions. Folks, I am one of those peekers! (But you already knew that…)
Last week, I bought davroe for my hair, and these are my reasons.
1. It is Australian made and owned.
2. The shampoo (I chose a color safe one) is sulphate, petrochemical and paraben free. The conditioner (mine is a nourishing one for thick colored hair) is petrochemical and paraben free.
3. The conditioner smells unreal and is enriched with aloe and blueberry. Those are two ingredients I haven’t seen before in hair care, and it made me curious.
4. It didn’t cost me the earth; about $21AUD per bottle.
5. Lots of lovely little words on the label caught my eye: olive oil, wheat amino acids, rice protein, sunflower seed extract, grape seed extract, green tea, the list goes on.
My review is a good one! I feel as though this is a really great transitional product for me or anyone trying to lessen the amount of chemicals they come in contact with. But certainly, I am still on the look out for the most natural hair care available. Who knows, it may already exist, just outside my price range :) Nonetheless, davroe is the best thing I have done for my hair to date, that is, apart from this DIY hair treatment!
Olive oil, flaxseed oil, coconut oil. Nothing you can’t understand or pronounce! Mix it up, slap it in your hair, avoiding the roots. I left mine for an hour. You could add avocado too, if you like.

After I rinsed out the treatment, I shampooed and conditioned and my hair felt epic.
Do you have any DIY beauty secrets you’d like to share? I think I will continue blogging on DIY natural remedies.
Have a wonderful working week!
This is so cool, because switching to products without harsh chemicals – especially in shampoos – was a new year’s resolution of mine, and I finally found a brand here in Australia that I’m happy with. And by happy with, I mean, can afford!
I tired a DIY face mask last week with Pawpaw and gelatin which was an epic fail, so I’m looking forward to trying this out and joining in your epic success!!!
Have a great week!

Very good.
Thanks for the great and honest review!.
We were very flattered you took the time to review our products in such depth. Four years ago Davroe made the decision to change our professional hair care range, this was done because we felt we could still produce a good quality, effective hair care range.
Our aim was to improve our product to note use SLS/SLES, parabens and petrochemicals as well as making the products 100% vegan.
Davroe are proud to say we have never tested on animals and have always tested our products on ourselves. Why? Because you can still produce a good product without all of the nasties that can harm the hair, ourselves and not protect colour. Throughout our products we strive to use natural and plant based ingredients in place of chemicals.
Our company is over 80 years old and fully Australian owned. Our products are all made in South Australia. We choose to use lots of lovely products that not only sound good but are effective when used in our hair care formulas, such as aloe which we all know is calming and helps to smooth the hair. Sunflower is all important for protecting colour and includes anti aging properties. Olive Oil, grapeseed and green tea extracts are all anti oxidants which act as free radical scavengers to help heal and calm the hair and scalp. Davroe products also contain other very important ingredients such as lemon grass, jojoba oil, jasmine extract and kakadu plum which all make for a very special range of hair care products made for Australian conditions.
Thanks for trying our products and your great write up. It is always great when we see such positive feedback.
Kindest regards
Your Davroe Hair Wellness Team
A great post! I have always had an awareness of using more natural products but never the urgent necessity to try more. With my allergies, I received advice to avoid certain ingredients and stopped using most products in my bathroom in November last year. I’ve been trialling MooGoo shampoo and conditioner and had found a great groove where I no longer HAVE to blowdry my hair, no irritation on the scalp and soft hair. I then decided to experiment by going back to my really expensive products for a couple of weeks. Wow. My hair health took a big nosedive. So now I won’t feel bad about getting rid of them, no matter how much they cost. Best of luck with more discoveries that work for you!
Im on the lookout for new hair care. Just finishing up the ones I have in the bathroom. This sounds perfect. its everything im looking for so im going to give this product a try.
Thanks Tara. Keep posting your DIY treatments xx Kristen
