NOURISH: Epic Chakra Quinoa

Get your bliss notes

I asked you to vote via Facey and Insty, and vote you did. Our winner this week is soul food, but for all of you who were hanging out my coconut-ty, Snickers-y creation thingy, it’ll grace your screens in a fortnight. Promise.

My relationship to food isn’t perfect. It’s a work in progress, but since I’ve been taking a more-than-holistic approach to how I feed my body, not only am I feeling more and more at one with it and what it needs, but I feel more creative in the kitchen. Kind of like an alchemist…

There’s a reason that we’re encouraged to ‘eat the rainbow’; the vibrational frequencies of the colours of the foods we ingest directly cleanse, balance and heal their corresponding chakra – and hey! – whaddya know – our chakras exactly simulate the colours of the rainbow, in exact order. Man, I love this shit! Life is SO clever!

This is truly soul food at it’s finest. I mean it – when you prepare a meal like this and hold onto the intention that you’re going straight for the gold (your chakras), you are feeding your soul.

And it’s rocket science. It’s fun! Create a base of quinoa or brown rice, and then starting from the root chakra, use colour therapy to inspire you with ingredients while working your way up.

You can use my ingredients as inspiration, but please – go nuts!

Chakra Quinoa

To cook the quinoa:

Soak 1 Cup quinoa for 30 minutes, drain, and then cook on the stove in 2 Cups water.Once it reaches the boil, turn the heat right down, and keep an eye on it until all the water has evaporated and you have light, fluffy quinoa (this shouldn’t take any more than 20 minutes).

Root Chakra

  • Grated beetroot
  • Finely chopped chilli
  • Fresh tomato

Sacral Chakra

  • Roasted pumpkin (or sweet potato, or carrots). Chop the pumpkin into cubes. Roll the cubes around in coconut oil and sea salt. Roast for about 20 minutes on 180 degrees C.

Solar Plexus Chakra

  • Add 1 level Tbsp ground turmeric to your quinoa, in the final few minutes of cooking

Heart Chakra

You know what to do here… Go berserk with the greens, baby! Kale and silver beet were a no show at my markets this week, so instead, I used:

  • Chopped cos (spinach would be awesome)
  • Sunflower sprouts
  • Avocado
  • Shitloads of basil

Throat Chakra

Don’t worry, you don’t have to scratch your head while trying to decide upon something that’s not only blue, but edible to add to this dish… Our throat chakra governs free will, choice, and expression – so consciously deciding that you’re going to prepare a vibrant, organic, intention-filled meal, balances your throat. How cool is that!?

Third Eye Chakra

  • Kalamata olives (they even look like little eyes!)
  • Red onion

Crown Chakra

Make meal time a spiritual practice by preparing, serving and eating it in the moment. Minimise distractions, consciously chew your food, taste the different flavours, and feel the textures in your mouth. Put your fork down in between mouthfuls. And don’t forget to breathe! It seems like a silly thing to say, but most of us are unconscious when we eat, myself included. Less hoovering, more appreciation.

Once you feel satisfied with your ingredients, you can jazz your quinoa salad up however you like.

I added activated pepitas, sliced pear, and a dressing of apple cider vinegar, flax oil, sea salt and pepper.

The best part? When on one magical spoonful you get some beautiful caramelised pumpkin, a leaf of basil and salty olive. Yum.

Holy Moly Guacamole! That looks A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!
I eat a lot of quinoa, but really need to pay attention to eating all the colours of the rainbow instead of just green (and orange, as I am a tad obsessed with pumpkin!).
Thank you for sharing babe. xx
