An Ode to My Little Location Independent Biz

Get your bliss notes

location independent

Deep sigh.

I did it. I made it.

The ‘place’ in time that I always thought was some type of elusive holy grail…

Not only have I miraculously (and I’ve gotta say, magically) stumbled/ been guided/ landed myself in the world of self-employmentbut – the big one (at least for me) – my business is location independent. Those very words are like sweet nectar dancing from my tongue.

If you know me – and I think you do – you’ll recognise that this ain’t a brag fest.

This is one of those blogs posts that spills out with equal parts disbelief, and a steady, unwavering knowing that it was always going to unfold this way. Simply because a thread of me believed that maybe one day it might.

Those people with a dream and a lap top? I was one of them. Still am. But how the hell does a Macbook Air and a skull full of hypnotic, Makes No Sense dreams equate to creating, like, a job? A lifestyle? My freakin’ livelihood?

Now I know.

Where do I start? Where’s the bridge that’ll carry me over the other side of the river? Can I even do this? Am I even worthy?

Now I know.

LINEI take my seat on the airplane, and just as I start beaming at the incredible dose of extra leg room, a tray moves in front of my face accompanied by a cheerful: Orange juice or sparkling wine, ma’am? Don’t mind if I do.

Ah. So, this is Business Class.

To begin with, I feel uncomfortable. Sort of like a big fat crazy assed fraud. Sort of like maybe I should have worn my skinny’s and stilettos on board this plane, instead of my over-sized tee, yoga tights and DC outdoor winter boots. Ah, who I am kidding? I’ve never even TOUCHED a pair of stilettos.

But then, it all starts to feel a little more cosy. A little more… deserved.

And as the staff offered me New Zealand pinot, or a hot towel, or the myriad of entertainment on offer, I just smiled at them. Thank you.

But I don’t think they really got it. No, really. Thank you.

When the cabin was dimmed and fell silent, on came my spotlight. As my fellow passengers nestled in for the night of flight, I got to work. My pen scribbled across the page as I scrawled out blog posts that (hopefully) you’d read while I was travelling. You did read them, right? ;) Because, while I was journeying to Japan to connect back in with Mama Mountain; while all senses where aching for the kinda high that can only come from a snowboard shred; while the delicious truth of Yes! I’m On Holidays! was clonking around my psyche loud and proud, causing quite a ruckus, still, I was thinking of you.

Still, I was writing for you.

In this video, I talk a little about my journey to location independence. It a casual ‘conversation’ between you and I; just the two of us, sitting on our knees, on the tatami mat, with a mini mug of green tea beside us.

For those of you who are a little curious about the other video I mentioned, you can check that out right here for some vintage (brunette!) Tara.

Actually, I’m going to go out on a limb right now and suggest you do watch it. For a few reasons:

  • Like I said in the video above – I’m super green, with hardly a clue but a whole lot of heart. It might inspire you to know that this video was recorded less than 2 years ago. Holy shit balls can things change in 2 years, or what?
  • When I busted out onto the coaching scene, I promoted myself as a Fear-Buster. Watching back on this video, I can see why. There’s a kind of wisdom that we can’t see in ourselves when we’re blissfully naive. If you can see that resilience in me, then know this: it’s in you, too.
  • If you feel like you are at the ‘beginning’ of your journey (whatever that means), allow me (thanks to this time travel machine called youtube) to wrap you up in marshmallow inspiration so you can feel supported, guided and held. You’re right where you need to be.
  • Nothing screams ‘transitioning from side job hustle to location independence’ like the preview of staff accommodation I was living in, complete with dirty towels, graffiti and makeshift bunk beds. We’ve come a long way, baby.

Okay, over to you, big dreamer. What’s your holy grail, if you don’t mind my asking? What’s your icing on the cake? The cherry on top? What’s the golden vision you’re believing in – in business, blogging and/ or life? I’d adore it if you’d share with us.

Remember: Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t.

Right now I am dreaming and putting my dreams into action. I’m in the worker-bee phase, planning, manifesting, hoping, visioning. Right now I do what I love, 100% of the time. But I’m greedy — I want to do MORE things that I love. So I’m working on a humble little website. Planting a seed. Growing some goals. I’m going to give it my all and see what happens!

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the video you referred to up there was the catalyst for me changing my life. You were, and continue to be!, such an inspiration to me lovely Tara xx

Girl! I love how you write. I pretty much feel like we’re BFF’s right now and you don’t even know me. I love this story and I hope one day to be where you are, flying business class to a month-long getaway. I know it’s well deserved so I just wanted to say CONGRATS!

Thanks chick! And thanks for your active presence on Such Different Skies. You are so NOTICED. :)

I just had to point out that you are wearing the same jumper in both of the videos! I keep coming back to your journey when I need a gentle reminder that I can absolutely have the life I dream of. At the moment I’m in the process of carving out a little corner of the interwebs specifically for snowboard babes like you and I – we’re progressing slowly but surely around the ‘day job’ but boy am I THRILLED to have the wheels in motion.

        My trusty old knit! Haha

I’m thrilled for you too babe. Go Jaime, go!

    • 26 February 2014

Arghhhh! You’ve tipped me over the edge, I think I absolutely have to do it this year – there’ll never be a better time, right?!
You’re right though, there are so many fantastic offers out there this year it’s real fun and games trying to decide who to go with!
      xx

Tell me about it! It’s a free-for-all! Haha. Go with your gut Hayls. At the end of the day, it’s about MARIE’s awesome content, and those of us putting something else on the table are hoping to ‘plug the gaps’ as Rachy calls it.

I love that everyone can decide what ELSE they want in their life, which’ll compliment B-School…

Health? Soul work? 1:1 support? Community? A mind set makeover?

        It’s pretty groovy :)

Oh Tara Bliss! I swear my heart skips a little beat when I see your name land in my inbox. Your post & vintage Tara video have just given me the final nudge I needed. Today’s the day I join BSchool with you & Rach :) x

Well then, today’s the beginning of a VERY significant journey for you beautiful Sam. Another journey to add to what has already been a huge few months to you (and judging by our conversations, B-School may very well be the salve you’re seeking on this quest for change).

Adore the pants of you, ma lady. xx

This is SO FREAKING INSPIRATIONAL!!!! I love that you are enjoying your location independence and remaining SO grateful for what you have done for yourself. I have that feeling that I’m going to be very useful soon and make a buttload of money too. I can’t wait!

Great post, keep them coming, lady x

      Hey Tara,

Ive signed up for your emails and nothing came back for me to ‘authorise’, also, I sent you an email abut B-school stuff – did you get it?

Thanks Tara for once again giving me just the right words/feeling/energy exchange that I need. Your work is such an inspiration to me, so much so that I have signed up for Rach’s BE-BH course – yeha! I aspire to B-Sch next year. This is all such a challenge for me, a complete technofool – I even had to open my first Facebook account just for Rach’s course!! Many blessings to you Tara xx
PS since your website jazz up – lovin it btw – I can hardly read the comments or about Tara bit. It’s really faint…

Is it strange for me to say that I saw MYSELF in your vintage video? I feel like I was watching what I would have been like 12 months ago, even 6 months ago, even last week? At the start of my journey, finally starting to see what I might like to really do with my life. The beginnings of something bigger, and the whispers of what I really would like to devote my life to.

      You constantly inspire me.

Your (divine) description of what it was like on the flight to Japan is now a part of my dreaming. And when it does come true (which I know it will) I will think of you as I settle into my Business Class seat, feeling so grateful for my life.

      x

Tara, I haven’t been following you long but I LOVE the sincerity of your message! I think you are one of the most genuine people I have ever come across on the net. You speak directly to my heart. I have spent days researching B-School bonuses and I was really drawn toward yours but promised to give myself time to decide for sure. That was difficult because my whole self was screaming a huge YES, SIGN UP WITH HER NOW! And then I watched this video yesterday, I knew I was a gonner. I registered last night! Thank you for letting your true authentic self shine through. I know I’m just going to love you. I can’t wait to delve into your bonuses when the time comes! B-School! Yay!

You’re in for one hell of a ride lady beetle. xx

    • 11 May 2015

      Tara,
I was just looking for another vid of yours (what to do when your partner still parties I think) and after Infinite this weekend I found this! Gosh! Goddamn girl! Inspiration in 3 steps from brown haired girl to calm Japanese goddess to this weekends transformational bschool high priestess,
It is so good to see a path being tread that is so hugely inspiring, real, touching and in-tune.
Thank you a million times for all your help and guidance, I hope I can pay it back and forward, x

Oh, lovely, what a beautiful comment.

It’s helpful to see the whole journey, right ?
