Recently, allllllmost jokingly, I set out about twittering a vegan challenge to my bloggy besties. Actually, it was more of a vegan dare than a challenge. Most of us love food, not least of all my online friends, so I thought it would be fun to ask a few lovely omnivore ladies to create home made familiar dishes. But, here’s the catch; their dishes have to be inspired interpretations of their favourites. They have to be vegan.
People, I am not vegan, yet. I blog vegan recipes and talk about all things vegan because that is what inspires me. I am in all truth vegetarian, but instead of blogging vegetarian recipes, I like to keep my focus on what on what I inspire to be, and what I would like to inspire you to try. My effort on this vegan journey is a sloooooow one, the way I feel it should be. But, enough about me.
Anyone can benefit from mindfully preparing food with compassion; that is code for: animal free cooking (or un-cooking for all you raw foodies). It’s not rocket science. If you can prepare a delicious, comforting, delightful meal; without meat, without dairy, gelatin, bone stock, eggs… of course it is going to be better for your health. Of course it is better for the environment. And, most importantly, and obviously, of course it has saved a few animal lives.
Anyway, I really want to keep to focus here on fun. You can imagine how delighted I was tonight when I turned on my MacBook and found that my friend Catherine had indeed taken up my dare and created her very own vegan friendly plum crumble. I was so impressed, and to be honest, a little proud. Now, Catherine used honey in her recipe, which can be easily replaced with agave or maple syrup, but seeing as though I didn’t realise myself until a few months ago that honey wasn’t vegan (it never even crossed my mind), I’m not going to dock any points off her!
Please check out Catherine’s recipe, and while you’re there, the rest of her blog.
And, be afraid. Be very afraid. Because you may be the next to be tagged in The Vegan Dare.
And with that, Sophie, let’s see what you’ve got. I know you love dessert, particularly cupcakes. How will you tackle treats that are egg, milk, honey and cream free? I can’t wait to see what you bring to our virtual table!
In the meantime readers, may I encourage you will every cell in my long lanky body, to please partake in the worldwide phenomenon that is Meatless Mondays; a promise to yourself that you will dedicate one day a week to healthfully care for yourself and compassionately care for our animal neighbours.
Have a think about it! :)
Don’t worry, I know what I’m going to make! Or maybe I should make mine Christmas themed. So festive. Also, I should probably disclose that my cousin has published a vegan dessert book so…
@soph (owl vs. dove) UNFAIR ADVANTAGE!!!! :D Bring it!
Believe me… this was MY pleasure! Living in a household of vegetarians, and cooking for my vego partner every night, it’s changed the way I think about preparing food and opened my eyes to a world far beyond the plate of a meat and two veg. I find it so easy to be inspired by beautiful, seasonal produce year round living in Australia, and I think the healthiest way to think about food is to let what’s at the farmers market be your guide. Of course, up in the snow-capped peaks that’s a bit more of a challenge, but I hope you’re finding it relatively easy to live your dietary aspirations in your new home!
