I get asked all the time: ‘What crystal should I buy for (x, y, z)?’
or
‘Where should I start when buying crystals?’
I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest fan of studying metaphysical books and then deciding which crystals I want to buy. Instead, I’ll reverse engineer the process by noticing those that I’m naturally drawn to – whether it’s the beauty of the crystal, or the obscureness of it, or a nagging feeling in my body that just somehow needs it – and then, upon reading the description of the crystal, I feel as though it’s been created especially for me in that moment.
I 100% guarantee that the same will happen for you when you approach crystals this way.
After I bring the crystal home and start working with it through meditation, I’ll then often study it with my healing library here at home. Combining textbook wisdom with my own personal experience somehow strengthens the bond between my stone and I!
Notice whether you’re drawn to any colours in particular.
Colours, like everything else, are vibrational frequencies, and naturally, you’ll be attracted to what your energy field needs at any given time.
For example, if you recognise that you’ve recently invested in quite a lot of baby blue – a tank top, a toothbrush, a book with a blue cover – instead of shying away from a blue crystal, dive in, head first. Your soul is doing its best to invite this colour into your life as a means of healing and balancing your throat chakra (whose colour is blue).
The throat chakra governs free will, using your power of choice, expression, communication and authenticity; so trust that when you surround yourself in blue, you’ll be consciously setting an intention to both deliver and receive information from a higher place. Have a speaking gig coming up? An interview? An important phone call? A big day of blogging ahead? Throw on some blue clothing, and consider wearing or placing blue-lace agate, celestite, lapis lazuli, sodalite or turquoise in your environment.
When you’re gifted a crystal- take stock!
Our friends and family are just as intuitive as us when it comes to choosing crystals. Crystals given as gifts are powerful reminders of the energetic bonds we all share.
I have been given amethyst after amethyst after amethyst; during times when I was actively intending on opening my third eye (something that amethyst is very useful for).
I’ve been given chrysocholla at times when I’ve felt a ‘lack of womanhood’ (chrysocholla is a stone that brings out Goddess qualities).
Point being, when you’re given a crystal as a gift, use it as a tangible sign that your body longs to heal on an energetic level.
I could seriously talk crystals and energy all day long, but instead, I’ll pass it over to you…
Firstly, I’d love to know whether you can connect the dots with either colours you’ve been attracted to recently, or crystals themselves. What do you feel needs healing on an internal level?
And secondly, I’ll be blogging about crystals every fortnight from here on in (yay!), so if there’s a burning question you’d love answered, go comment-crazy below!
And of course, share this around on your interwebs!

Hey Tara. Love this. (Just had a dream last night of you and I talking about crystals). I choose crystals the same way and im always intrigued to see what crystal someone picks up out of my crystal bowl when they come over. It always relates to whats going on in their life.
Recently the majority of crystals I have be drawn to are for the heart, throat and third eye chakra. Lots of Rose quartz, blue and green crystals and amethyst.
I love the idea of walking into a crystal shop picking up a crystal and thinking “hmm wonder why I am so drawn to this one” then going home to work with it and learn about it.
Love you!

LOVE this. I always pick them out based on intuition + vibration. You can always feel them speaking to you when you’re holding them in your left hand – and many times when I just couldn’t put the crystal down I knew I’ve found the one! :) It’s super fun and a great way to hone in on trusting your gut and intuition too! xx
Love this. Very true. This is one of the key ways we educate our customers when picking a piece.

Lovely topic Tara! Chrysocolla has played a huge part in my life too, dipping in and out to remind me when I need to let a little more feminine/yin energy infuse my sometimes yang-central days! Thanks for the reminder to tap back in to those beautiful hearts of the earth. Much love xxx
So, so true- I love that instinctive pull you get from knowing you’ve found the right crystal! It’s addictive! I’ve had the feeling a few times before, but it happened to me in major way at Crystal Castle near Byron Bay and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.
Love you work my darling! xx
I am in love with your fortnightly plan to write all about crystals! I have always had an interest in this area and have a small collection that are very dear to my heart.
Regardless of the healing properties and energies they are exquisite formations, miracles of our earth, universe and what we are all made of!
xx
Thanks so much for this post. Since taking part in the PPG2P so much has made sense to me with regard to the colours in my life. I went through a phase over the last year of being drawn to everything orange! Orange clothes, orange jewellery, orange food… I now understand that my second chakra was in desperate need of some help. The attraction to orange has become much less strong now.
I can’t wait for my next trip to the crystal shop. It’s like a little piece of self-discovery and some serious food for the soul.
Thanks for your words Tara.
I’ve always been drawn to crystals – they’re precious little stories of enlightenment.
The way i see it, if something so dense as a rock can change molecular structure- become transparent to the light – then so too can I.
It’s a nice concept to meditate on.
I’ve always felt an affinity with Labradorite. It’s unassumingly ordinary in the shade but shines with iridescent flashes of peacock blue, gold and pale green in the light. It’s a colour contradiction.
I wear it for protection against negative energies and to deepen my intuition and spiritual awareness.
I’d love to know more about crystal rituals to stimulate the chakras and which stones are best for finding the courage to open up and speak your truth.

I had a small blue kyanite shard in my pocket and was looking through a box of other blue kyanite and had this feeling that I would find the crystal I was looking for if I kept moving the crystals from the back on the top to the front. I kept moving them carefully, one by one to the front, until I picked one up and felt a jolt in my heart. I was a bit surprised for a second and then decided that being a man, maybe it felt it needed to grab my attention before I placed it in the pile and kept looking.
Thanks for the tips.

Thanks Tara! I am drawn to all things blue (including crystals) and have been given two turquoise crystals in the last couple of months. It hadn’t occurred to me to check in on my throat chakra but I’m now going to.

This is a great post and I’m so glad I read it! I used to have a lot of crystals around when I was younger but I’ve had a crystal-free period for about a decade now. I am so keen to get back into this lovely addition to my practice :)
“Colours, like everything else, are vibrational frequencies”
What does this mean?
