Homemade Acai Bowls. Fun Weekend Nourishment.

Get your bliss notes

IMG_1015Well, I could never have predicted that I’d take a massive U-Turn and re-introduce ‘recipes’ back onto the pages of this blog.

But, here we are! I’ve been re-inspired by food, and here are the three key reasons why:

  • Living on the Gold Coast and having access to buttloads of markets. I used to daydream about filling my fridge with organic produce; now it’s a reality.
  • YOUR reaction to my foodie pics on Instagram (@tara_bliss). And the biggie:
  • G&T Retreats! If you missed the memo, Glen and I are hosting our first retreat this October, and I have no doubt that his culinary skills are going to be just as much of a draw card (if not more!) then the opportunity to coach intimately with me. So in the meantime, allow us to open our kitchen to you via recipes here, and on my instagram feed.

Note: it will be painstakingly obvious when Glen’s working away from home (he works away every two weeks). When he leaves, I live off smoothies, salads, sweet potatoes and not much else! I’m super El Lazy.

So. Acai Bowls.

The love affair started just last weekend when Rach and I went on a glorious walk in the National Park. Afterwards, sweaty and parched and a little hungry, I caught someone scooping into a bowl full of purple frozen magic, covered in muesli. ‘I want that!’ Rach replied with ‘Aww, now I want one too! But I didn’t bring any money…’ I reached back into my little stealth pocket of my tights, and with a big smile, said ‘I’ve got a twenty!’. And the rest is history. Frozen, creamy, sweet, and loaded with texture on top.

Not entirely wanting to spend $10 for every inevitable Acai craving, and knowing that I could make a much healthier version anyway, I brought that romance back home, into my kitchen. And I’m pleased to report that it’s more or less a daily inclusion in my day.

Blend:

  • Frozen bananas
  • 1 tablespoon of Acai powder
  • Tiny splash of coconut water OR good old H2O. Not too much liquid though, aim for banana soft serve texture.
  • This is beautiful as is, but sometimes I beef it up with some Sun Warrior protein powder, and maca.

Top with your favourite combination of nuts and seeds to create a healthy version of muesli. I love:

  • Chia
  • Black Sesame
  • Quinoa Flakes
  • Goji Berries
  • Flax Meel
  • Sunflower seeds, and my absolute bloody favourite..
  • .. Buckwheat Groats! These are the best. They’re nutty and crunchy and they taste divine. Soak thoroughly, twice. And then rince and dehydrate, or bake at a low temp until dry and crispy.

And, voila.

Serve how you see fit, but seeing as I’m slightly neurotic about these types of things, let me report my findings.

  • Eating it out of a jar is fun, but a little messy and fiddly.
  • A bowl is fine, but boring, and reminds me too much of eating cereal. Ho hum.
  • But a wine glass!? A big, open-mouthed, hefty wine glass in perfect! It transforms your Acai Bowl experience into a luxurious event, and there’s plenty of room to dig around with your spoon!

Haha!

500 words on Acai Bowls. Deary me.

Have a beautiful weekend gorgeous, and please let me know of your favourite uses with Acai, below. If this had you licking your lips, then share the love with a tweet.

Happy Self-Centred Sunday for tomorrow! Love you x

Mmm, takes me back to Brazil. Granola, banana, honey was my fave topping. Of course it was about R$3 (AU$2) and absolitely everywhere, so I never needed to make my own. I’ve wondered many times if it would be as good if I did. Time to give it a go, I reckon!

ps – buckwheat groats are the bomb. I dare you to eat them with coconut milk and pineapple pieces. Hello crunchy virgin pina colada!
