A few weeks ago I wrote about my experience with Resistance, and how it shows up in my life. To cut a long story short, I realised that the more I resist something, the more important it is to me, or as Steven Pressfield puts it ‘the more love’s in there.’
I’ve been resisting writing this intro for Alana for that very reason. She is so important to me, and I feel so much love for her, that I’ve been butting up against whether I can smother her in enough kudos in just a few paragraphs. But alas, I will try.
For one, she follows that heart of hers. After qualifying as a health coach, Alana quickly realised that she was more passionate about creating beautiful design for other health coaches and wellness professionals, rather than being one herself, and I’d like to think that I played a very, very small role in boosting her confidence with this decision. Earlier in the year, Alana worked for me. At the beginning, she helped me with artwork for the Party Girls Guide to Peace, but she quickly became my assistant; knowing the back end of my business better than me!
I remember feeling that things were about to go boom! in Alana’s life, but there was a bottleneck preventing that from happening, and I felt intuitively that that bottleneck was the work she was doing for me. As much as I adored her help, I knew that being an assistant wasn’t what seduced her into rapture… but design? Seems she found her ‘thing’, and watching her online presence grow as she pleases entrepreneurs hungry for beautiful eBooks just makes me so goddam happy. It’s a beautiful reminder to follow the pull when it comes to our desires.
Alana’s also hilarious and so super warm and incredibly generous. Let’s give her some love!
Sum up your mission in one sentence
I’m a graphic designer who works with rad entrepreneurs, coaches and wellness professionals to bring their hard work and invaluable information to visual fruition!
Can you share with us one of your most vulnerable moments (and in hindsight, what made it so beautiful)?
Last year, I was made redundant from my cubicle job. In the moment, I felt very vulnerable – I was afraid about security, money and finding another job. In hindsight, it was the best thing to happen to me. Without it, I wouldn’t have take the leap to entrepreneurship. The decision was kind of made for me, and that gave me a little bit of ‘permission’ to test the waters with working for myself. Not only do I really, truly love working for myself, but it taught me important lessons about patience, money, saying out loud what I really wanted, and what security really means.
What turns you on?
Deep conversations with interesting people, confidence, fleeting moments of presence, people who tread their own path, sunrises and sunsets, fireworks, my husband in jeans and a white tee ;) and Brad Pitt circa Troy!
What makes your blood boil?
Racism and discrimination of all kinds. Factory farming.
How do you define confidence?
For me, confidence is believing in yourself and what you want and being willing to back yourself up. For a long time, I would back away from what I really thought or wanted as soon as I was challenged, assuming I was in the wrong. I was a massive People Pleaser! Confidence is being able to say no, speaking up, and believing in my worth.
When was the last time you experienced pure, unadulterated joy? Can you give us the juicy details?
My wedding day, in April this year. I knew it was going to be memorable and exciting, but I didn’t expect the intense joy I felt. I’m grinning from ear to ear in almost every photo! I can’t explain it… I was just so HAPPY in every cell of my body.
What makes you feel most ENLIVENED?
Traveling and exploring new places makes me feel alive, whether its a local hiking track or faraway place (I am a nomad at heart). Again, deep conversations with interesting folks. I also have these little moments when I am hanging with my family, when life just feels perfect.
Combining my passions with a business I love makes me feel …
Like I am learning that we really can choose how we live out lives.
Few people know this about me, but I …
Have terrible balance. Turn the lights off and I fall over!
I secretly wish I could …
Migrate for the winter. I was not made for less than 25 degrees C!
To me, the words ‘Such Different Skies’ mean …
Exploration and fresh perspectives.
