The BLISS List

Get your bliss notes

This post needs a sub-title: What I Learnt From Quitting My Job & Hitting the Road.

What a month! What a tumultuous, on-the-edge, rebellious, swaying-between-lots-o’-creativity-and-none-at all, sometimes difficult, often frustrating, but ultimately totally freeing month I have had! For over three years now, I’ve been snowboarding, exploring and globetrotting with my love, until just over a week ago, we decided to put an end to the full time version of that part of our life. As I write this, I’m sitting on Mum’s sun lounge on her deck; the sunlight is hitting my face and there’s a beautiful Brisbane breeze in the air. Quite a contrast to the stagnantly de-energised environment of Mount Buller this season.

Reaching this moment of bliss and freedom required a few difficult decisions, and me scooting off to Melbourne to hire a car in a frenzy before returning briefly to the hill and rescuing Glen from it’s clutches. Bonnie and Clyde- rebelliously road tripping it up the east coast of Australia. It’s the start of a new era, my loves! An exciting one- one of entrepreneurship and boundaries and glorious twice annual overseas holidays (goodbye working holidays and staff accommodation!).

I’ve learnt a lot from this experience, so I’d love to use this post to remind you of a few things (particularly all those passionates and creatives who are battling it out in day jobs).

Don’t Take Too Much Crap

Transition often requires sacrifice. Baby steps. One thing at a time. I’ll do this now (though I know it’s spiritually/physically/emotionally draining) because I need financial or experiential assistance (or a little more time, because I’m not quite ready yet!). And let’s face it, we all know in our hearts when it’s a soulful sacrifice; when it’s worth it. This was recently true for me, the pro’s of my then current situation vastly outweighed the cons, and I was intent to stick it out. Unfortunately, experiences change quickly when confronted with dishonest employers who can instinctively lie while maintaining eye contact.

This a big no-no for me. A head-shakin’, eyebrow-raisin’, finger-pointin’ no-no. Here’s the thing:

If you are a delicately honest, authentic person- then you need to remove yourself from the energy of compulsive liars.

If you’re dreaming big> of living your life on purpose, of being beautifully abundant and kicking goals- then you need to remove yourself from the energy of people who have five maxed out credit cards, who have built their empire on financial lies and loop holes, and who have everything they’ve ‘invested’ themselves in up for Receiver’s Sale.

If you’re a good listener, and generous with your time and love- then you need to remove yourself from the energy of of those who constantly talk over you, stringing sentences together in a desperate effort to be the only one heard.

Okay? Promise? You can’t create meaning in a temple of lies. Get out. Scramble for the exit if you have to. You deserve better, and you will find better.

Force the Disconnect

It wasn’t easy- I mean come on: I’ve got places to be and posts to write and people to coach! Those thoughts were regular ones of mine which often battled with: This is a perfect opportunity to rearrange your priorities, forecast the future and enjoy this quiet time with Glen’. I’m so glad that the latter voice prevailed, and that my laptop remained closed for the journey. Hot tip: our fellow human beings are so generous with their care and understanding. A hurried ‘girls, be patient with me here- I haven’t forgotten about you- I’ve just had a spanner thrown in the works’ was responded to with an overwhelmingly supportive- ‘Tara! Take your time, it’s fine!’ Lesson learnt, and it’s a goodie.

And on the Flip Side: Know Where to Allow Connection.

I found solace in highway deep and meaningful’s with my soul mate and in phone calls with my Mumma Bear. As we drove further north I was hypnotised by the countryside and the sunshine. The SUNSHINE! What a perfect way to end the never-ending winter over the last three and half years: a gradual adventure up, up, up toward warmer beams of light. We veered off the M1 to stand at lookouts and marvel at the ocean, which we’ve missed so I much. I ate chia seed pudding from a jar, in a car park, basking in the morning rays. I truly felt alive. Can I get a ‘Hell yeah- bring on summer!’?

Bottom line: aim for joy. Aim for waking up with a smile on your face. I am now, and it’s radical.

In other news…

Active Procrastination

Such a rad ‘invention’- who came up with this? When sitting on your butt is the most soulfully productive thing you can possible do. I’ve been manifesting up a storm; vision boarding, journalling and affirming my truths with electric intention and a peaceful understanding that’s everything’s going to be alright. I’ve sat in the front yard in my bikini painting with water colours, just ’cause. Mum and I have sipped tea on the deck while giving each other Oracle Readings (perfectly perfect Oracle readings, no less!). Lovely times.

Guest Posting

Did you get a chance to check out the post I wrote for Tink Simplicity last month: How To Say Yes When You’re Scared Shitless ? You’ll love it.

I wrote about all things green juice for Sweet Lime & Spiced Tea: Getting Juicy with Such Different Skies.

And, the gorgeous Chizelle interviewed me for her Wednesday’s Wonderful Women series. I LOVED this interview: pressing questions that went deep- we talk business, inspiration, dreams and fear.

Also…

Rooibos tea with coconut oil. Skypes with soul mates. Tribe power. Slowly but surely getting the hang of this WordPress thing. Seeing the mock ups for my header design- I’m SO excited! Five minutes of meditation before bed time. Lots of puppy love. Eating family dinners and sharing (a) bottle/s of wine. Waking up super early (hello mornings! I’m back!). Dreaming and scheming with a few key power houses. 3pm nanna naps. Spreading the green juice and green smoothie love with the fam.

And you? Are you putting up with a lot of shit? Are you having trouble creating boundaries that keep you spiritually safe? Feeling a little caged, or on the flip side, totally free? Tell me all about it. Happy weekend everyone, have a cracker!

Lovely to have you back Tara, and sounds liked the sun has already re-energised you and lifted your spirits!!

I’m feeling free right now as I just booked a impulsive ticket to Europe! I leave in a month to go and visit my sister. Need a change of scenery for a few weeks, trying to visualise and peel back as you describe but so far still not sure what I want my future to look like…

Also, 3pm nanna naps are the bomb ;)

Tara, this absolutely hit the mark for me! Thankyou for sharing your story. I’m in the midst of working out how to better bring my purpose into the world, removing myself from toxic friendships (and dealing with the guilt of not just going along with things and being the “nice” person anymore) and connecting more with my own joy and dreams, and it is always good to get a butt kick to remind you that you are on the right journey and to keep going even when you don’t really know where you are going.
I’m in Sydney, and have been thinking for the past few days that I wanted to go up to Brisbane for a holiday. Perhaps it’s a sign? :)

Here’s to loads more sunshine, good vibes and inspiration.

      Hi Tara,

A couple of spontaneous detours along the Web landed me here and then I found myself caught up for the ride, the reason mainly being that the quest for the kind of freedom you’re writing about is pretty dear to me. For a long time I’ve been transitioning away from those realms of toxic energy so I can live with my integrity intact. Still, there’s those moments when I long for dramatic leaps rather than slow transitions!
