What Energises You?

Get your bliss notes

The fitness and medical industries would have us believe that carbohydrates, fats, proteins and alcohol fuels us. And yep, those things do sustain us- some combinations more than others, obviously.

But I’m interested in knowing what inherently sends your energy through theroof on a vibratory level.

A few weeks back, I saw real-life angels; Louise Hay, Cheryl Richardson and Doreen Virtue, all on stage at Hay House Melbourne. The room had a heartbeat; like soulful bass, and it wasn’t because the audience was guzzling green juice or cranking out fifty pushups (we weren’t). We were high on spirit.

I left Hay House so much more aware of what I decide turns me on and lifts me up. One more time: I decide what turns me on and lifts me up. It’s things like this: choosing to be surrounded by epic people (this often requires taking big, beautiful risks), feeling the first rays of morning sunshine on my face, waking up with the shiny faith that today will be a damn good day, striking to-do’s off my list (gives me a huge sensation of space within my day each time that black marker hits the page), and, feeling deeply inspired by the love I receive from my soulmate. These are just a few things that energise my existence. There are many, many more.

When we start to identify what it is in our lives that energises us in a positive, uplifting way, we can also choose to observe what fearful, ‘non-productive’ behaviours fuel us throughout our lives. Do any of these energise you-

  • Drama, bitchiness, gossip?
  • Confrontation, debate?
  • Judgement, comparison?
  • Angst?
  • Fear (the nervous, jittery type that literally sends energy convulsing through your body)?

Here are some guiding questions that you can use to become truly curious about yourself.

Do I want to be someone who is brought to life by manipulations, arguments and stubborn behaviour?

What do I want to be motivated by?

Who’s energy would I be more than happy to soak in?

And who’s energy am I willing to shield myself from?

Am I willing to become energetically responsible for myself and the impact that my whole being has on the world?

I love this conversation and I could talk about this topic all day! Personally, the moment I discovered that I didn’t need a mug of herbal tea, or a bowl of vegetables or even a a night of awesome, steamy hot sex to make me feel better- huge ‘A-ha!’s’ shot around my mind like fireworks. Sure- all the above said definitely make me feel bloody good, no doubt about it, and I’ll rarely say no to any of them, but here’s the thing: no matter how comforting or pleasurable or essential they are to my vitality, they’re not as readily available as the immediate energy of inspiration.

A few rituals that have worked wonders for me:

Blue Light. Close your eyes, and see blue: different shades of blue, blue colours, blue lights. You’re surrounded in them. Breathe in this colour, very slowly, and nice and deeply. After just a few deep breaths, your body should feel as though it’s humming.

Do the work outside, in the grass, and get your feet dirty. This is a daily practice for me now, and I often take little breaks from my computer by planting my hands on the Earth for a few seconds of divine synthesis. It’s a powerful cocktail of chilling with Mother Earth, getting shit done, and loading up on ze Vitamin D. I know this isn’t conducive to 9-5ers, but how about taking your blog/art/life’s work outside on the weekend?

Just ask. Silently ask for a little more cosmic juice to get you through the day. Instead of further depleting your sources by attempting to cultivate external energy, close your eyes for a few graceful, receiving minutes.

Feel the breeeeze, baby. Open up to it and let it sing through you. Listen to what it says, and then scribble away.

And finally.

What are the external influences in your life?

Do you buy gossip magazines, or do you read soulful books? And are you willing to change your answer?

Do you watch reality television, or do you trade tv time for present experience? And are you willing to change your answer?

Do you participate in workplace gossip, or do you offer a polite ‘this is none of my business, I’d rather not talk about it’? And are you willing to change your answer?

Let’s strive to fill our tanks up with radical, joyous, productive, soulful waves of energy that pump infinitely through us. Where do you need to adjust your energy-diet? What are you proud to consume energetically? Share your discoveries below.

So beautiful. Totally resonating with you this morning.

I’ve started to learn that it’s important for me to shield myself energetically – and that it is my responsibility to do so. (No use pointing fingers and blaming others for draining me!)

I love recharging outside – so vital. Required. On the grass or sand. So healing, and you can literally feel your energy and your angels vibrating at a high frequency around you. Frequency of LOOOVEEE baby!

      Love you dudette!

MMMMMM, love-charging in the grass. Wrestling with puppies helps too. Atta girl- I think it’s important to know when we have to protect ourselves energetically, but also when to completely open ourselves up.

        Love you back x

I love when you find things at just the right moment. Ah… Delicious serendipity!

I’m such a big believer in this. Ive used tapping into my deepest personal desires and the inspiration and wisdom of others to radically change my life, including a rather large supercharge in the past few months. Instead of constantly comparing myself to others and completely draining my energy with negative self talk, I’ve changed my attitude and consciously focused on learning, expanding and grooming positivity. It’s meant leaving situations and toxic friendships, but the difference I feel in myself is so positive. I’ve worked to create new habits that foster my inspiration and power me up with goodness. I’m achieving things I didn’t believe I could and it all has come down to allowing myself to see things differently and gaining my energy not from being a cranky smurf, but being inspired, courageous and brave enough to believe that I could create a life I love.

Yay for serendipitous synchronicities (try saying that five times fast!) haha

I love what you said about learning, expanding and grooming positivity. Well said sister, power to ya!

I get energised when I feel that I am living in alignment with my purpose – when my actions consciously reflect where it is I want to go and who it is I want to be. I also get very energised from being outside (especially around the ocean and around trees) and exercising.

I’ve lately come to realise that my job is the opposite of energising. I am drastically unchallenged and under-utilised, and not only does that mess with your mental state, it messes with your energies. It might sound weird or crazy or counter-intuitive, but a day at work spent doing nothing is EXHAUSTING. On the (all-too-frequent) days where I have no engaging tasks at work, I leave feeling utterly spent. Empty and gutted and so far less than whole…

I also struggle to change my energetic state between work and home. Just this week, I’m started to develop a new habit in order to better make an energetic shift between work and home: when I get in my car, I take five deep breaths, I put on an inspirational/wellness podcast, and I drink a bottle of water and eat a healthy snack (man, when writing these out, they sound lame!). The idea is that I arrive home calm, hydrated, with non-bottomed-out oh-my-god-give-me-chocolate blood sugar levels, and having learned something. It’s going well so far!

I think the best thing for my energy is to feel engaged. And that is an active, conscious, choice that I have control over.
New mission = seeking conscious engagement.

        I love your new mission.

You’ll be okay sweetheart. No doubt about it. Maybe this job is the exact push you need to move onto more soulful work. Hugs x

I can totally relate! Pretty much to everything you wrote…& your end of work ritual doesn’t sound lame, it sounds awesome!

Perfect timing gorgeous – was literally just telling a work colleague how I barely watch the news anymore because I’m really conscious of the negative energy I’m taking in (particularly political dramatics, something I’m not AT ALL interested in).

I get my energy from nature. From deep conversations. From being deliberate about what I’m doing rather than rushing through. From gratitude journalling, and big cuddle sessions. From sunshine + blue skies. Travel, meditation + the knowing that where I am is perfectly right for me at this point in my life.

      LOVE YOU xoxox

        You are just perfect.

And boooooo to the news. Shut that out long ago and I actually find myself clam up when I can hear all those bullshit morning programs in the background while mum’s watching them. Ick.

      Beautiful and vibrant post :)

I feel energised after yoga, breathing in salty fresh air by the ocean, walk amongst the trees, have deep soulful discussions with my soul mate and, embarrassingly, cleaning the flat! Clearing out the old to make way for the new :)

Totally right about avoiding negative energy. I had dinner with a friend not long ago, someone I have known for a very long time, and I left feeling so unhappy, I came home and chatted about this to my husband and he said he was wondering if I’d ever noticed – this friend takes but never gives. Drains me. Its a sad realisation, I love to give, I want to be there for her, but sometimes you have to say enough’s enough!! Easier said than done of course.

Thanks for the uplift darling xx

Oh Em, I know what you mean. It is a shame- but there’s a you-beaut miracle in your observation of the situation. You’re one step ahead of many others who aren’t sure how to protect themselves energetically. You have the power beautiful x

    • 13 September 2012

Love this post and sooooo’ many things raise my energy. A walk in the sunshine, a damn good chat and cuddle with my gorgeous cat, watering and tending to my beautiful garden and DANCING in my lounge room, in a bar, at a gig with thousands of other sweaty people, clapping and singing and singing at the top of my lungs in the car with the volume pumped! I’m sure I look like a crazy person to the car stopped next to me – but do I care? Nup! Love it ♥

Speaking of dancing (PS Michele I feel like we’re both riding a similar wave right now), I actually danced in my room this morning! I woke up while it was still dark, lit some candles and danced around awkwardly- yet, kinda beautifully (i think) around my room, streeeeetching and leaning around- easing my way into the day. God it felt GOOD. Helloooo new ritual. x

      • 15 September 2012

Beautiful ♥ I dance awkwardly and beautifully too :-) Dancing is enriching and wonderful and something soooooo’ special about letting the body move in any way it feels it needs to go. And the more open and carefree we can be about it, the more liberating it is.

Great new ritual – Love it X

    • 14 September 2012

I loved this post, Tara! And you are exactly right – physical energy is one thing (one very magnificent thing), but mental, emotional and spiritual energy is another thing all together. Something transcendent. Something that connects us to the earth, and to all things (and people) around us. Beautiful x

Wow, just want to say I’m so glad I found your blog! So much of what you have to share really resonates with me, and many others I am sure. Keep up the good work, so inspiring! I have a long way to go on my journey – have been trying to figure out how to fill this hole in my life. This helps :-)

    • 15 September 2012

Wow,this one’s got my thinking Tara… here’s what I’ve been struggling with lately… and you’ve just completely crystallised it for me… How do you know whether your spiritual energy is down because of external factors that can only be fixed by removing yourself through some big SCARY life changes… or whether it’s all down to internal factors that can be overhauled from right where you stand? I’m going to have to really think on this one over the weekend! x Catherine

I’ve been playing around with this idea for the past few months. I used to beat myself up a little if I didn’t eat my necessary intake of veggies/protien etc etc. Than I had this crazy, lightbulb moment of a dream where I literally stood in front of myself and said ” the pressure you put on yourself to eat so perfectly is doing more damage to you than not eating that extra serving of kale”. It was mind blowing + totally changed my perspective.

I’ve haven’t watched tv (with the exception of football finals) in months, we actually have no tv in our new place, not knowing/hearing about all the negative shit that’s going on around the world is nice, I rarely feel weighed down.

I’m “officially” unemployed but I’m working my but off to actualise my dreams. i find I’m fulfilled even with the absence of income.

It’s usually the simplest of things that energise my heart & soul. Like reading a good book, listening to tunes, laying in the sunshine for hours, cuddling my husby without thinking of my next to do task, watching friends had “aha” moments after I say something profound to them, pouring my love into the babies all around me, speaking my mind, travelling near & far and praying.xxx

I love my morning routine: Get up (6am), have a hot ginger & lemon water x2, make an amazing breakfast (e.g thismorning: buckwheat porridge with almond milk, toasted coconut, raw honey, mulberries, cinnamon & cashews), read some amazing blogs on my laptop, and then get into my day. A good morning energizes me. And yoga/running on the beach!
